Getting VPN to work through NAT firewalls

With the rising popularity of telecommuting and the increasing need to protect their electronic assets, companies large and small have been turning to Virtual Private Networking (VPN). The good news is that many savvy IT departments realize that many of their telecommuting employees share their broadband connections with consumer-grade routers. Those folks have made their lives easier by using "NAT friendly" VPN gateways and VPN clients that don't require any changes to home users' router settings in order to successfully set up a VPN tunnel.

Just Passing Through


If you're not so lucky, however, you still may be able to get the job done. First thing to check is whether your router has any settings for PPTP or IPsec "pass through". These are commonly found in Linksys routers but you may have to hunt around for them. Figure 1 shows a shot of the bottom of Linksys' BEFSR41 Filters screen, which contains separate enables for PPTP and IPsec pass through.



All you need to do is enable the setting for the VPN protocol that you're using, reboot your router and, if you're lucky, the VPN connection will come right up.

Note: Not all routers have these enables and the lack of them doesn't necessarily mean that you can't get VPN working.


Open up that Firewall

Still no connection? The next step is to try opening some ports in your router's firewall to get your VPN connection made. In each case, you'll need to open the specific ports (and protocol) to the IP address of the computer that you're running the VPN client on. NOTE that port mappings work with only one computer at a time. If you have multiple VPN clients that you need to connect, your router will have to support the VPN protocol that you're using without requiring ports opened.

If you're using Microsoft's PPTP protocol, TCP port 1723 is the port you'll need to forward to allow PPTP control traffic to pass. Figure 2 shows the Forwarding screen on a Linksys BEFSR41 set to forward this port to a client with IP address 192.168.5.100.

PPTP also needs IP protocol 47 (Generic Routing Encapsulation) for the VPN data traffic itself, but note that this is a required protocol, not a port. The ability to handle this protocol must be built into the router's NAT "engine" - which is true of most present-generation routers.

IPsec-based VPN's need UDP port 500 opened for ISAKMP key negotiations, IP protocol 51 for Authentication Header traffic (not always used), and IP protocol 50 for the "encapsulated data itself. Again, the only "forwardable" item here is UDP port 500, which is also shown programmed in Figure 2 to the same LAN client machine - protocols 50 and 51 must be built into your router.

Tip: Not all routers are created equal! Some allow only one VPN tunnel to be opened and used by a single client. Others support multiple tunnels, but with one client per tunnel. Unfortunately, most vendors don't make the VPN pass through capabilities of their products clear in their documentation, nor do they have support staff properly trained to provide this information either. In most cases, your only option is to try a router in your specific application, and make sure you can return it and get your money back if you can't get it working.


Still not Working?

Getting many IPsec-based VPN setups working can be a black art due to the wide variation in techniques used by various vendors. Although IPsec products have become more uniform as the technology matures, your company may use older, more proprietary products that may not be configured with NAT in mind, or require additional ports to be opened in your firewall.

One day like today, back in 2005, we made public an idea about what the next step in working at Internet should be from our point of view. We called it “eyeOS“, because we wanted to create something visual and intuitive (eye), and similar to a traditional Operating System (OS) for the end user, taking advantage of the latest web technologies and sharing capabilities.

It’s really difficult for us to specify key moments in this three years. Competence has appeared, and sometimes eventually disappeared. We have seen how a market we started without knowing we were doing it has been growing and growing, and there are now more than 50 web operating systems out there. We have given more than 35 conferences about this concept and eyeOS recives about 250.000 unique visits per month now.

Of course, there have been problems during this three years. But all those problems have had a common point: They have been solved thanks to the community behind eyeOS. eyeOS has grown with its community, and some of the members that were there since the first days are today the people who mantains the eyeOS Websites Network, forums, blog, wiki, mailing lists, and even creates some parts of the eyeOS main code.

This is why eyeOS survived in some difficult moments and this is why today eyeOS in the de facto web desktop.

The Other Method To Install Asus Eee PC

Please note this tutorial works on all computers not just the Asus EEE PC.

To complete this tutorial you need a 32bit version of Windows XP or Windows Vista installed on your home PC.

What you'll need:

USB_PREP8 (click here for download)
PeToUSB (click here for download)
Bootsect (click here for download)

Special Note: If you use the program Nlite be sure to keep the manual installation files as the USB_prep8 script relies on these files.

Extract the files in Bootsect
The next step is to extract USB_prep8 and PeToUSB.
Next copy the PeToUSB executable into the USB_prep8 folder.
Inside of the USB_prep8 folder double click the executable named usb_prep8.cmd.

The window that opens will look like this:

You next window will look like this:



These settings are preconfigured for you all you need to do now is click start.
Once the format is complete DO NOT close the window just leave everything as it is and open a command prompt from

your start menu (type cmd in the search bar or run box depending on your version of windows).

Inside of the command windows go to the directory you have bootsect.exe saved.
(use the cd directory name command to switch folders)

Now type "bootsect.exe /nt52 R:" NOTE R: is the drive letter for my USB stick if yours is different you need to change it accordingly. What this part does is write the correct boot sector to your USB stick, this allows your PC to boot from the USB stick without it nothing works.

Please note: When running the bootsect.exe command you cannot have any windows open displaying the content of your USB stick, if you have a window open bootsect.exe will be unable to lock the drive and write the bootsector correctly.

If all went well you should see "Bootcode was successfully updated on all targeted volumes."

Now you can close this command prompt (don't close the usbprep8 one by mistake) and the petousb window.

You window you see now should look like this:



If it doesn't try pressing enter.

Now you need to enter the correct information for numbers 1-3.

Press 1 and then enter. A folder browse window will open for you to browse to the location of you XP setup files (aka your cdrom drive with xp cd in)
Press 2 and enter a letter not currently assigned to a drive on your PC
Press 3 and enter the drive letter of your USB stick
Press 4 to start the process.

The script will ask you if its ok to format drive T:. This is just a temp drive the program creates to cache the windows installation files. Press Y then enter.

Once it's done formating press enter to continue again, you can now see the program copying files to the temp drive it created. Once this is done press enter to continue again.

Next you will see a box pop up asking you to copy the files to USB drive yes/no you want to click yes.

Once the script has completed copy files a popup window asking if you would like to USB drive to be preferred boot

drive U: select YES on this window.

Now select yes to unmount the virtual drive.

Ok we are done the hard part, close the usbprep8 window.

Now make sure your EEE pc is configured with USB as the primary boot device.
Insert your USB drive and boot up the EEE.

On the startup menu you have two options, select option number 2 for text mode setup.

From this point on it is just like any other windows XP installation delete/recreate the primary partition on your EEE pc and format it using NTFS. Make sure you delete ALL partitions and recreate a single partition or you will get the hal.dll error message.

Once the text mode portion of setup is complete it will boot into the GUI mode (you can press enter after the reboot if your too excited to wait the 30 seconds)

Once the GUI partion of setup is complete you will again have to boot into GUI mode this will complete the XP installation and you will end up at you XP desktop. It is very important that you DO NOT REMOVE THE USB STICK before this point. Once you can see your start menu it is safe to remove the usb stick and reboot your pc to make sure everything worked.

This method has advantages over all current no cdrom methods of installing XP to the EEE. You do not have to copy setup files in DOS to the SSD and install from there. It gives you access to the recovery console by booting into text mode setup, and it gives you the ability to run repair installations of XP if you have problems later on.

Adding Extra Fonts to iPhone

how you can add extra fonts to your iPhone for use with WinterBoard and maybe other applications as well..

Advantages of adding extra fonts:

* Set your SpringBoard icon labels to the font of your choice [through WinterBoard]
* Get extended font support for viewing websites in Safari
* Get extended font support in applications, either as a user or a developer

For this tutorial I will add the Calibri font family to my iPhone, the following fonts of this family should be available on your computer by default

* Calibri
* Calibri Italic
* Calibri Bold
* Calibri Bold Italic

[i'm doing this on a Windows Vista system, if you're not using Vista some steps for obtaining the fonts may be different]

Terms for this tutorial:
Font Family is the font class, a font family may have many similar fonts, these fonts have different names and slightly different styles. eg Arial, Helvetica, Calibri are font families
Font Name is the name given to a font eg. Calibri, Calibri Bold, Calibri Italic are fonts in the Calibri font family
Font File Name is the filename for the font file. eg. Calibri.ttf, CalibriBold.ttf
Note: changing the filename for a Font File *does not* change the Font Name for that file. i’ve seen many people tryin to get fonts to work by renaming the files. it simply won’t work because no matter how many times you change the filename, the metadata contained in the file remains the same. a Helvetica font is a Helvetica font whether it’s named Helvetica.ttf or Calibri.ttf

Copy the fonts:

* 1. Start > Run, or WinKey + R
* 2. Type fonts in the Run window that opens
* 3. Hit Enter
* 4. This will open the Fonts folder. alternatively you can open it through My Computer C:/Windows/Fonts/ [where C:/ is your windows drive]
* 5. Make a new folder Calibri on your Desktop
* 6. Find the Calibri fonts in the Fonts folder and select and drag them to the Calibri folder, or use copy/paste.
* 7. The fonts will have these file names
o Calibri: calibri.ttf
o Calibri Bold: calibrib.ttf
o Calibri Italic: calibrii.ttf
o Calibri Bold Italic: calibriz.ttf
* 8. Rename the font files to these names
o Calibri: Calibri.ttf
o Calibri Bold: CalibriBold.ttf
o Calibri Italic: CalibriItalic.ttf
o Calibri Bold Italic: CalibriBoldItalic.ttf

I prefer not to have spaces in the filenames that i’m going to put on my iPhone.

Install fonts on iPhone

* 1. Connect to your iPhone using WinSCP or Fugu via it’s IP address. username: root, password: alpine
* 2. Navigate to this folder /System/Library/Fonts/Cache/
* 3. Create a new folder MyFonts in the Cache folder

we’ll copy our new fonts in this folder so that they are easily identifiable and properly organized.
* 4. Copy the four files for Calibri font to the MyFonts folder
* 5. Navigate to the folder /System/Library/Fonts/
* 6. Copy the file CGFontCache.plist to your desktop and use this link to convert it to plain xml format. http://140.124.181.188/~khchung/cgi-bin/plutil.cgi
* 7. Open the converted CGFontCache.plist file with your favorite text editor.
* 8. There are two sections in this file you need to edit Names and TraitMappings
o Names is an array which has key value pairs of the Font Name and the Font file name.

# TraitMappings is an array which maps the various font styles to fonts of a font family.

it has the following syntax



Note: the four elements are fixed, you can not use any other values for these, they must be Plain, Bold, Italic, Bold-Italic. The font name will vary from font to font. If you don’t have a particular font for a font family simply exclude the respective lines from it’s entry, ie if you only have Plain and Bold fonts use only the Plain and Bold , pairs and exclude the Italic and Bold-Italic pairs.

This is a tutorial to configure Firefox defensively for the web and help protect against MITM attacks, IFRAME attacks, SSL attacks and other security threats not mentioned.
